Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says a visit by the US President-Elect Joe Biden to Fiji next year would highlight the issues faced by Fiji and the rest of the world because of climate change.
While speaking to Sky News Australia, Sayed-Khaiyum says they are very keen to engage with Biden’s government in respect of climate change and ensuring they further the objectives of the Paris Agreement and indeed achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Sayed-Khaiyum says Biden brings the most ambitious climate action agenda to the White House that they have ever seen.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has invited Biden to visit Fiji during Fiji’s chairmanship of the Pacific Forum in August 2021.
If Biden accepts the offer he would become the first US President to do so.
Bainimarama says it would be Fiji’s pleasure to host Biden and show him first-hand how Fijians are coping with climate impacts while also leading the world by example towards a net-zero future.
